Question:"Our Green Committee has decided that we should control the height of the vegetation in some areas of the rough as we are experiencing delays in play due to lost balls. We would like to know if any sprays are available to control bracken since we think the difficulty would be largely eliminated if the bracken could be removed."
Answer/Response:"The chemical asulam has recently been accepted as being an effective treatment for bracken. Asulam is marketed as Asulox which should be applied when the bracken fronds are fully expanded, i.e. July and August in most areas. The chemical should be used at the rate stated by the makers and applied as a low volume spray, i.e. 10-15 gal./acre from a suitable crop or knapsack sprayer. Bracken may not show damage immediately but little or no re-growth should appear in the following year. Any re-growth which does appear should be weakened further by cutting. Asulam will damage grasses and, therefore, overall treatment should preferably be restricted to areas where a dense cover of bracken exists which will largely protect the grass. Fescues and perennial ryegrass are less affected than some other grasses. A check on the grass may be acceptable in the rough, but if in the spring after treatment the grass seems weaker than is desirable, a light application of fertilizer should aid recovery."
