| Question: | "I send you a sample of turf on which are the pupae of a small fly. The larvae of this fly did considerable damage to the greens last year. Could you advise on their control?" |

| Answer/Response: | "We found in the turf sample some pupae of gall midges (Mayetiola spp.). These are fairly common in turf but it is rare to find them doing any extensive damage. The complete life histories of these flies are not known but it is believed that there are several generations a year. We suggest you treat the affected greens with chlordane which has quite a lengthy residual effect. It will probably kill some of the midges and will also kill any larvae emerging from eggs which the remainder of the midges succeed in laying. It is important to make sure the chlordane gets well into the soil and unless it rains heavily after making the application it would be best to water the turf artificially with sprinklers." |
