Question:"Our turf nursery is now well established and we are at present using the turf to repair wicket ends. As you know we do not have a groundsman and the members who look after the ground are finding it very difficult to obtain uniform levels since the turf is cut by hand and therefore varies in thickness. Is there a simple method of overcoming the problem?"
Answer/Response:"You could hire one of the specially designed machines to actually cut the turf to an even thickness or, alternatively, you could continue to cut the turf by hand and then "box off" surplus soil. This is done with the aid of a suitably sized, three-sided wooden tray (commonly referred to as a turf box) which will accommodate turf of a convenient size for handling, the depth being determined by the required thickness of the finished product, say 25-32 mm (1-1 ¼ in.). The turf is placed grass side down in the box and any surplus soil above the tray edges is trimmed off to their level with a stout knife or an old scythe blade. In order to preserve the useful life of the box the edges are often protected with metal strips. Using either method, all turf will be of an even thickness and, provided the turf bed has been well prepared, uniform laying should not present any problem."
