Question:"Could you please give us advice on the best method of making a new green. We are re-siting a green and will use turf from the old one."
Answer/Response:"The first step is to build up the foundations after stripping off turf and top soil. It is essential that the foundation be made firm, to minimise settlement, but not too compacted so that drainage suffers. The surface of the foundation should be moulded exactly to the contours you require on the finished green, ensuring that there are plenty of flat places for the pin, and that the final surface will naturally shed rain water. For heavy or wet land drainage is required, and on very poor sites an ash carpet plus drains may be advisable. On the other hand on sandy free draining sites it may be reasonable to omit drains in the first place, and only introduce them later if proved necessary. On the shaped subsoil surface spread a minimum depth of 9 in. good top soil to provide an even surface layer. A sandy loam soil would be best; alternatively ameliorate the existing soil with sharp lime free sand and peat. Cultivate any ameliorants thoroughly onto the top 6 in. of soil. Follow by subsoil cultivation to relieve any compaction. Prepare a firm, even turf bed by alternate raking and heeling, then rake in a suitable fertilizer. Lay the turves (boxed 1 ¼ in. thick) working from planks on turf already laid. Follow up with a light roll and then a good top dressing of sandy compost well worked in."
