Question:"The playing surface of some of our tees, particularly new tees, is uneven. To help improve levels some of our members would like a heavy roller used on them. Should we use a roller or not?"
Answer/Response:"We suggest it would be a mistake to heavy roll any tee to try to even up its surface. A new tee which has not settled down could be rolled once or twice but nothing heavier than a 5 cwt. hand roller should be used. You should rely on top dressing for correcting the unevenness, applying it mainly during the autumn and early spring. A sandy friable compost mixture at the rate of 4-6 lb. per sq. yd. should be used. Frequent dressings may be made but each dressing must be absorbed by the turf before applying the next one. Tees with really uneven surfaces which can not be corrected by top dressing within a reasonable time would best be lifted and re-laid to correct levels during the winter when time permits."
