| Question: | "Small patches of grass on our bowling green are at present growing in a strange manner. We enclose a piece of turf from one of the affected areas and would be grateful if you could tell us the cause of the trouble and how it might be cured." |

| Answer/Response: | "The turf sample consists of browntop bent (Agrostis tenuis) and some plants are yellowish and showing definite tufts above the general surface. The grass is, of course, a very desirable species and we have only occasionally met the condition which is not fully understood. It would appear likely to be the result of some physiological disturbance, possibly caused by injury from some unknown cause, e.g. insect, eelworm etc. We do not know of any specific cure but the condition has never proved serious. Scarification in conjunction with mowing usually eliminates the symptoms and the problem does not appear to recur." |
