Question: | "We have problems with wetness along one touch line of our pitch which is situated beneath an embankment. Extra drains were put into the worst part at this side of the field last summer but have not cured the problem." |
Answer/Response: | "It would be best if you had us take a look at the problems and discuss possible solutions with you. In a situation like this you must make sure that surface run-off from the bank can not affect the pitch. Any catchwater drains (if present) must be functioning properly with clean blinding material, such as fine hard ash or similar brought to within ½ in. of the surface and left exposed. Assuming that the extra drains were properly laid and connected to the existing drains, then soil conditions (e.g. compaction, heavy clay) are probably such that water is not getting through the soil quickly enough. If normal aeration by hollow tining plus dressings of sand do not help, then you will have to think in terms of deeper work like sub-soil cultivation or possibly the introduction of sand filled slits." |
