Question:"We have a large willow tree adjacent to our green which has an adverse effect on the green at this side. The greenkeeper wants it out but members rather like it. What do you think?"
Answer/Response:"Root systems of willows are very wide spreading, extracting moisture and nutrients. The trees cause shade in summer and drip during the winter to the detriment of fine turf. Additionally the roots seek moisture in drains and can rapidly block them. The easy solution would be to remove the offending tree but you may consider a compromise as follows. Firstly cut off some larger branches and thin out the head particularly over the green but treating the tree as a whole to retain a balanced shape. Saw cuts should be as close to the main trunk or branch as possible and treated with a proprietary wound sealer. Secondly, excavate a trench 2 ft. deep alongside the path the full width of the tree canopy, cutting out all roots. Insert an upright metal sheet in the trench to prevent re-growth under the green and back-fill the soil. Check the ditch drains for blockage and clean out as necessary."
