| Question: | "As you know a pipe line has been put through our course and restoration work has been going on for some time. We have now been informed that the contractors are short of soil on two of the fairways and the engineer has proposed that hydraulic seeding would get over the difficulty. As we have some doubt about this proposition we would first of all like your advice on the matter." |

| Answer/Response: | "Hydraulic seeding, as such, is simply a method of spreading grass seeds with the help of water. The process is frequently augmented by the addition of fertilizers, organic mulches etc. and used for getting vegetation established on difficult and/or no-soil situations. If the affected areas of your fairways are short of top soil this presumably means the original soil has been lost and, therefore, ought to be replaced. Hydraulic seeding will not restore top soil and to have turf quality etc. matching the untouched fairway areas you need top soil." |
