Question:"Several of our greens have recently become affected by black slimy patches (sample enclosed), these being present particularly in hollows in the surface and on our 5th green which is in a low-lying situation. I would be grateful if you could tell us what is causing the trouble and how it may be cured."
Answer/Response:"The patches which you refer to are, in fact, very dark green rather than black and are caused by an alga which is growing on the surface of the soil. The algae do not harm the grass directly but are symptoms of excessive moisture - algae can only flourish on a more or less permanently saturated soil surface. If it is considered that some treatment is required immediately then you could use sulphate of iron (1 oz. in 2 gal. to 4 sq. yd.) or sulphate of copper (1 oz. in 25 gal to 100 sq. yd.). Care must be taken with copper sulphate to avoid excess since it is a plant poison. Whether or not you treat with chemical the basic cause of the trouble must be attended to - improving the drainage system if necessary and/or aeration work to help surplus water through the soil."
