Abstract/Contents:Describes golfer Sam Fried's efforts to document wildlife at Wintonbury Hills Golf Club in Bloomfield, Connecticut. States that since 2002 "Fried, a retired trial attorney, has been spending his spare time meticulously documenting the wildlife at this Pete Dye-designed facility...Fried has been retained by course operator Billy Casper Golf to continue the [wildlife] inventory and help ensure that the wildlife thrives." Explains that "the course has 110 acres of turf cover, only 80 of which are managed closely. The remaining 30 acres of fine fescue roughs are left virtually untreated and unkempt except for the occasional mowing. Even then, mowing is performed around the schedule of some of the animals living on the course." Concludes that "had the course not been built, the area, zoned for residential housing, probably would be devoid of many species that...live there. And thanks to Fried, that diverse natural coexistance is well documented and protected by establishing the course as a sanctuary for wildlife as well as for golfers."
