Abstract/Contents:Discusses the use of biodiesel in golf course maintenance. Explains that "unlike petroleum-based diesel fuel, biodiesel is refined from domestic vegetable oils (soybean, peanut or canola), animal fats or recycled cooking oils using a simple process called transesterification...Pure biodiesel, known as B100, can be used by itself or blended with traditional petroleum-based diesel fuel in any concentration, ranging from 2 percent (B2) to 20 percent (B20) or more by volume." States that "the use of biodiesel can have significant advantages over traditional diesel fuel. Since it is derived from plant or animal fats, biodiesel is completely biodegradable and non-toxic." Mentions potential concerns inolved with using biodiesel, stating that "a major concern of those considering switching to biodiesel is whether engine manufacturers will void their parts and workmanship warranties when biodiesel is used." States that "an obstacle to the widespread adoption of biodiesel has been price, which traditionally has been higher than petroleum-based diesel because of higher refining costs...The use of biodiesel has grown from 500,000 gallons in 1999 to more than 30 million gallons in 2004, with the bulk of that growth driven more by government initiatives...than free-market economics."
