| Abstract/Contents: | "Some walk-behind rotary spreaders intended for professional use incorporate a means of limiting the right side of the pattern to allow applicators to work adjacent to sidewalks, driveways, and flower beds without throwing granules into the non-turf areas. Two general methods are used to limit the pattern. The simplest system is a slide that closes off the left-hand port, thus limiting throw to the right. A more complicated system found on some spreaders adds a flip-down deflector on the right side of the impeller to prevent throw to the right, in addition to closing a port. Both systems were evaluated with fertilizer granules and ground corn cob. The simple port-closing system was found to provide a better pattern but was most effective on a spreader that did not have a pattern cone. The deflector caused a peak in the pattern at the center and did not provide an appreciably sharper cutoff at the side." |
