Abstract/Contents:Defines fertilizer as "any natural or manufactured material added to soil to enhance the growth of plants." Describes the history of fertilizer and lists organic fertilizer sources such as barnyard manure, sludge, and compost. Mentions that "new technology has brought to the marketplace some remarkable organic fertilizers that bear examination." Lists possible reasons why organic fertilizer programs may lack long-term beneficial results. States that "the most difficult problem to overcome for most golf course superintendents who would seriously like to use organic fertilization is the deleterious effect of sodium in the soil chemistry." Suggests items for superintendents to request if "approached by a sales representative who claims to have the latest and greatest bio-organic fertilizer." Concludes that "if the organic fertilization philosophy appeals to you, make the commitment necessary to embark upon an agronomically sound, bio-organicfertilizer program integrated with your existing program the first year, and seek out and take the advice of an experience agronomic consultant you trust to guide you through such a transition."
