| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the continual improvement in turfgrass technology. States that "mechanization has changed [superintendents'] way of living. It has freed [them] from the drudgery and toil of hand labor." Describes the typical turfgrass manager as "a quiet, industrious, unassuming fellow who is nice to everyone. He is not, by nature, a person who likes to argue and battle for every piece of equipment he should have. As a result he surrounds himself with a bunk of junk machinery." Cites a lack of demand as the cause for the slow research market. States that "the shortage of labor ranks as a No. [number] 1 problem in golf course maintenance. There is only one way to solve it - and that is to mechanize - to use equipment that will get maintenance jobs done fast, with less men, and get them done well." Concludes that "mechanization is essential to get the job done - fast and well..it means job security." |
