Abstract/Contents:Presents an "analysis of landscape water demand and its potential reduction on the grounds of the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority administration building in the northern suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia." Details a planting plan, which initially did not include water conservation. States that "to add water conservation as a criterion, the quantitative water requirement of the proposed planting was first evaluated so that any design alternatives could be compared with it." Discusses "two alternative designs [that] were produced to try to reduce the site's water requirement within the functional and aesthetic intentions of the original plan." States that "the planting that has...been installed at the site combines water-saving ideas from both of the alternative plans." Explains that "water must be delivered to the plants through efficient long-term operation of the system in accord with the reduced demand." Concludes with observations that "the planting design sets the water requirement"; "even aesthetically and technically competent planting plans can be revised to yield substantial reductions in water demand"; "reducing water demand need not sacrifice the shade, screening, aesthetics and other environmental effects which a planting design is intended to create"; and "reducing water demand is only the beginning of water conservation."
