Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the four rugby/football pitches, two cricket squares, and sand-filled carpet and sand-dressed carpet pitches at London, England-based Latymer Upper School. Details maintenance practices used at the facility, stating that "it's a hungry site that takes a lot of feeding because it's so incredibly free draining." Explains that "the pitches are sat on a site that is a far cry from the previous London clay base. They were boggy and wet in winter and bumpy and dry during the summer." Describes the groundsmen's role as "[keeping] the soil open and aerated. [They] do that by verti-draining to a variety of depths using different tines as this helps to avoid a soil pan from forming." Provides the fertilizer application process, including "[taking] soil samples from each pitch on a regular basis to keep a close eye on soil nutrient status and to determine what fertilisers [fertilizers] need to be applied, and in what form and when." States that "[the] main battle is keeping the sward green. It loses colour [color] really quickly." Concludes that "this has to be one of the highest specification school sports grounds in the area - it's on a par with the training grounds of premiership football clubs." |
