Abstract/Contents:Profiles Baildon Golf Course in West Yorkshire, England, and green keeper Phil Sutton, explaining that it is a 160-acre site in "wide-open windy moorland - about 800ft [feet] above sea level - with little shade and no trees." Explains that "managing a private golf course on public land brings its own challenges." States that "because it's fairly free draining sandy loam...water logging is not a problem" and golf can be played all year. Explains that "with help from his deputy head green keeper Martin Heggie and assistant Matthew Palmer, Phil begins annual renovations in October after the club's last major competetion of the season." States that "copious amounts of aeration are carried out by Phil, using a tractor-mounted slitter, to a depth of 200mm [millimeters] in one direction." Mentions that "turf comprises fescue and bent grass species, which offer drought tolerance as well as hardwearing qualities." States that "as far as fertiliser [fertilizer] goes, Phil's philosophy is simple - so long as the grass is growing, and it can grow well up on the moor, then he leaves it alone."
