Abstract/Contents:Discusses warm-season turfgrass selection factors. States that "[in 1996], if [one was] building or renovating a golf course in the southern portion of the United States where warm-season turfgrasses have traditionally been used, grass selection was a simple proposition. Bermudagrass, and primarily the hybrid cultivar Tifway (419), was the standard and was considered to have very good overall adaptation for tee, fairway, and rough areas...However, golfer demands and expectations for fast putting speeds have also resulted in efforts to push bentgrass further south." Presents "a review of [warm-season turfgrass] general characteristics along with guidelines to use in the decision-making process." Discusses range of adaptation; species and cultivar adaptation; water usage, salinty tolerance, and drough resistance; pest problems; fertility requirements; cold tolerance; and sunlight requirements. Mentions establishment rate, wear tolerance, and recuperative ability as "characteristics that need to be considered in the selection process."
