Abstract/Contents:"BAS 517 02H (BASF) has recently been developed for annual and perennial grass control in all broadleaved crops. A field experiment was conducted in 1986 at the Massachusetts Agricultural Experiment Station to evaluate this new postemergence graminicide for both early and late postemergence annual grass control in seedling alfalfa and to determine the effects of annual grass suppression on alfalfa yield. BAS 517 02H was evaluated at 0.009, 0.018, 0.035, 0.07 and 0.14 kg ai/ha. Alfalfa 'Saranac AR' was conventionally seeded at 16.8 kg/ha on May 9, 1986. Early postemergence treatments were applied on June 3, 1986 when alfalfa was at the 4 trifoliate leaf stage and the annual grasses were at the 3- to 5-leaf stage. Late postemergence treatments were applied on June 14, 1986 when alfalfa was at the 6 to 12-trifoliate leaf stage and the annual grqasses were at the 4- to 5-leaf stage and tillering. The most important grass weed species were yellow foxtain [Setaria lutescens (Weigel) F.T. Hubb.] and large crabgrass [Digicatia sanquinalis (L.) Scop.]. Broadleaf weeds were controlled with a blanket application of 2,4-DB at 1.12 kg ai/ha on June 9, 1986. Plot size was 15 by 6 m. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. All herbicides were applied with a backpack CO2 sprayer at 152 kPa in 450 L/ha. BAS 517 02H applied both early and late postemergence resulted in unacceptable to excellent annual grass control by the time of the first alfalfa harvest on August 1, 1986. No difference in grass control occurred between early and late applications. Significantly greater grass control was obtained with BAS 517 02H, as the rate of herbicide increased from 0.009 to 0.07 kg/ha. The 0.07 and 0.14 kg/ha rates reduced average dry matter yields of annual grasses 97 to 100% as compared to the dry matter yield of the control (5711 kg/ha). Dry matter yields of first cut alfalfa increased as weed pressure decreased. Dry matter yields of alfalfa increased as the rate of BAS 517 02H increased from 0.009 to 0.035 kg/ha. No increase in alfalfa yield was obatined at rates greater than 0.035 to 0.14 kg/ha rate of BAS 517 02H were increased 117% over the dry matter yields of the control. Little, if any, annual grasses were present at the time of the second harvest on Sept. 8, 1986. The positive response of alfalfa yeild to earlier weed control did nontinue, however, to the second harvest. Average dry matter yields of second cut alfalfa with the 0.018, 0.035, 0.07 and 0.14 kg/ha rates of BAS 517 -2H (2472 kg/ha) were eincreased 23% over the alfalfa dry matter yields of the control. Results indicate the importance of annual grass control for increasing alfalfa yield during the establishment year. A 0.035 kg/ha rate of BAS 517 02H was adequate to provide the weed control necessary for excellent alfalfa establishment."
