Abstract/Contents:"Six cultivars of St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum [Walt.] Kuntze) were subjected to light intensity regimes of full sun, 69% sun, and 42% sun for a 4-month period. Cultivars were grown from 10 cm diameter plugs in 21 cm diameter pots filled with a fumigated, screened Arredondo loamy fine sand (Grossaremic Paleudults, loamy siliceous, hyperthermic). Fertilization and management was equally maintained on all pots. Four pots per cultivar were grown in each light intensity. Sampling was performed during four months exposure to shade treatments. Shade did not affect total chlorophyll content on a leaf area or leaf weight (wet or dry) basis over all cultivars. Differences were noted between cultivars for these parameters. Specific leaf weight, first, second, and third internode diameters decreased linearly but the second internode length increased linearly with decreasing light intensity. Length of stolons was not affected by shade but number and total stolon length were reduced. Differences for most variables within shade treatments were noted between cultivars."
