Abstract/Contents:States that "although methyl bromide has been the subject of an ongoing United Nations-supported phaseout because of its harmful effects on the ozone, the golf maintenance industry continues to have access to existing stockpiles." Explains how until 2006, "the golf industry had been able to use methyl bromide through a critical use exemption...the [Golf Course Superintendents Association of America] GCSAA withdrew applications for critical use exemptions for [2006 and 2007], and users instead have been drawing from existing stockpiles." Discusses how some believe the use of this stockpile is "illegal because the stockpiled production from before 2005 is supposed to be dedicated to the critical users and should be used up before any new material is made to the critical users." States that "many GCSAA members need methyl bromide because they say nothing else is as effective at killing turf and pests, and the GCSAA will continue to work on their behalf." Argues that "while the ocean is believed to [be] a main source of methyl bromide in the atmosphere...it also consumes the compound." Concludes that "it may be more difficult or more expensive to grow grass of desired quality, but [it can't be said that] it's impossible to grow grass without methyl bromide."
