Abstract/Contents:Discusses pesticide laws in Canada. States that "Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) is taking action to strengthen the federal pesticide regulatory system for pesticides, and to encourage the public, and lawn and turf managers alike, to adopt more integrated approaches to lawn care and pest management across [Canada]." Mentions that the "Pest Control Products Act (PCPA), which is expected to come into force in 2004, will strengthen Canada's rigorous safegards against the risks to people and the environment from the use of pesticides." Discusses possible improvements to post-registration control of pesticides, supporting sustainable pest management and risk reduction, and urban pesticide issues. Also mentions that "the PRMA, in partnership with provincial and territorial governments, is aiming to reduce reliance on pesticide use for lawn care through the application of integrated pest management (IPM) principles." Concludes that "while the public, stakeholders and municipalities continue to debate pesticide issues, pesticide regulators are pushing hard for regulatory reform and educational outreach. Although a complex process, with support from stakeholders, the PRMA can achieve its goal to protect human health and the environment, and foster a more integrated and sustainable approach to pest management that all Canadians can embrace with confidence both on and off the fairways."
