Abstract/Contents:Discusses the use of soilless, or washed, sod. States that "time and money are major factors [in deciding whether or not to use soilless sod], but so are rootzone preparation and post-installation care." Suggests that "the acceptance of washed sod is based on performance, which is based upon management...Not only does the customer need to be sold on the idea of paying up to 50 percent extra for washed sod, but he also needs to dedicate time and resources to care for it for up to two months following installation." Also discusses the use of washed sod in constructing golf greens to United States Golf Association (USGA) specifications. Presents the opinions of Brian Bouchard, president of Kingston Turf Farms, in Kingston, Rhode Island; Jeff Cole of West Coast Turf in Palm Desert, California; and Michael Spinks, president of Tifton Turf Farms, in Tifton, Georgia. States that "washed sod sales depend on the economy and golf course construction." Concludes that "customers should always remember that low price can hurt...when quality is critical, and that is definitely the case with washed sod for USGA greens. There are no short cuts or bargains. [One has] to do it right the first time."
