Abstract/Contents:Profiles velvet bentgrass (Agrostis canina L.), stating that "disease resistance and drought tolerance are two undeniable strengths, especially considering looming pesticide issues, potential irrigation water regulation and general environmental concerns." Describes bentgrass variety selection, and explains that "at Eagles Nest Golf Club in Maple, [Ontario, Canada], SR7200 velvet bentgrass was selected." States that "velvet has an upright growth habit and is considered to be the densest, finest textured of all bentgrass varieties. It is these attributes that allow it to produce a high-quality putting surface." Discusses the establishment of velvet bentgrass, cutting heights, thatch management, and disease resistance. States that "sod availability, fertility challenges and lack of research regarding use of growth regulators were among the challenges faced at Eagles Nest." Concludes that "well-maintained velvet bentgrass greens have the potential to be the purest surface a golfer will encounter in their lifetime."
