| Abstract/Contents: | Describes how to troubleshoot diesel engines, stating that "the amount and colour [color] of the exhaust smoke being emitted by the engine can often provide valuable information and aid in the troubleshooting process." Explains that "black smoke is caused by unburned fuel. The engine, for one of several reasons, is unable to burn all of the fuel that is being injected into the cylinder" and that "white smoke is caused by low combustion temperature. This may be the result of low ambient temperatures at start up, injection timing or coolant leaking into the cylinder." States that "burning oil in the combustion chamber causes blue smoke. Oil is likely leaking past the valve guides and/or seals, past the piston rings or possibly through a leaking oil passage through the head gasket." |
