Abstract/Contents: | Briefly discusses the 2005 Open Championship held at St. Andrews. Suggests that the tournament "posed more questions than it delivered answers, at least as far as the vexed technology debate is concerned." States that "while the lengthened Old Course was certainly a demanding examination for the players - and the scoring was slightly higher than in the 2000 Open - it is a little complacent of the R&A [Royal and Ancient] to declare the extensions a huge success." Concludes that "a true champion should have all his skills examined. Long iron approaches to par fours are now basically a thing of the past, and no practical amount of course lengthening can bring them back." |
