| Abstract/Contents: | "Securing adequate time for proper turfgrass establishment following athletic field construction and/or renovation is a significant challenge. Cool-season turfgrass species are established by two primary methods; seeding and sodding. Sodding is often the method of choice because of instantaneous turfgrass density, minimal weed competition, and the preferred turfgrass species on athletic fields, Poa pratensis, is slow to germinate and develop. Construction and renovation projects often get delayed thereby diminishing the necessary time for sufficient root development. Additionally, this critical establishment period typically occurs during the elevated temperatures of summer months. The objectives of this research were to quantify the effect of multiple sod establishment periods on rooting strength and playing surface quality. Sod established in December, covered with a permeable cover, had greater rooting strength than other sodding dates on three of the four dates data has collected. However, the increase in rooting strength did not result in an increase in divoting resistance." |
