Abstract/Contents:Profiles ground pearls, a turfgrass parasite "found attached to plant roots a few inches below the surface." Discusses ground pearl infestation, stating that "although there are many species worldwide, only two species (Eumargarodes laingi and Margarodes meridionalis) are known in North Carolina. Both are found at sites scattered thoughout the coastal plain, causing significant damage to lawns and other turf." Describes the life cycle of a ground pearl and dicusses damage caused by the ground pearl. Mentions potential control methods. States that "the standard recommendation for dealing with ground pearl infestations is to follow good turfgrass-management practices. A well-managed lawn tands the best chance of resisting and masking the damage." Concludes that "research in the Turfgrass Entomology Program at NC [North Carolina] State University will include additional trials with resistant varieties, as well as additional monitoring of field populations to determine the hosts and distribution of each species and the timing of each stage."
