| Abstract/Contents: | Presents a study conducted to "explore the effect of seaweed extract on the germination of creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra), prior to field trials of the material used to treat seed for hydraulic seeding on highway embankments." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "plots consisted of 140-mm [millimeter] covered petri dishes, each containing 50 cc [cubic centimeters] of Ottawa sand...that was shaken fairly level...The seaweed extract treatment solutions...were made on a percent by volume method with distilled water." Reports that "seaweed extract at the 0.5% and 1.0% rates increased dramatically the speed of seedling emergence from the sand as compared to the control." Suggests that "this material could be added to a hydroseeder slurry for highway or large-scale seeding, or seed could be pre-soaked in a solution of this material prior to addition to a hydroseeder slurry." |
