Abstract/Contents:Presents guidelines for golf green construction in the United Kingdom. States that "that there have been several major trials at the STRI [Sports Turf Research Institute] in which [researchers] have examined aspects of golf green construction." Reports that "the best sand types were uniform medium-grade materials. Sands with a wide spread of particles were susceptible to interpacking giving a denser rootzone with lower drainage rates. The coarsest sand was more difficult to manage particularly if the amendment rates were low because of increased irrigation and fertiliser [fertilizer] demands, and fine sands could be poor draining particularly if the soil amendment rate was high." Describes monitoring of sand-dominated greens, stating that "23% of greens had water infiltration rates less than 10 mm/hr [millimeters/hour] and 31% of greens had air-filled porosity values less than 10%." Discusses the use of amendment materials and the construction of drainage layers. Concludes that "use of the correct materials plays a major part in the provision of high quality sports surfaces. Extensive research has been needed to refine guidelines for rootzones and drainage layers, but with the publication of detailed recommendations there is now little excuse for use [using] the wrong materials for any area of sports turf."
