Abstract/Contents:Discusses regular engine maintenance, stating that "proper maintenance is key to keeping the engine running well." Explains that "knowing what to expect from [a] specific engine is the first step in heading off problems" and that "the type of engine will also influence its maintenance and lifespan." Suggests that "diesel engines have many advantages over gas engines" and that "the offset for these advantages is a higher initial cost for the engine." States that "one of the most common causes of engine problems is using non-original parts that don't match [the] engine's specs." Suggests that owners "be aware a lesser quality part - or a part with mismatched specs - can accelerate wear and tear on the engine." States that "after determining an appropriate maintenance schedule, there are three key systems that should be addressed in engine maintenance: air intake, fuel supply and lubrication." Recommends changing air filters rather than cleaning them, as "it is a much safer and effective maintenance method." States that "additional critical engine maintenance tasks often overlooked include adjusting the valve clearances and evaluating the injectors." Also recommends engine evaluation methods such as performing a compression test, comparing the compression of each cylinder, checking air filters, and replacing fuel filters. Suggests that "as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards tighten, Tier III and IV engines will become available...increasing the importance of fuel quality and maintenance." Concludes that equipment owners should "stick to manufacturer specified parts, materials and maintenance schedules to create an engine that will match the lifetime of its machine."
