| Abstract/Contents: | Profiles smooth bromegrass, highlighting insect infestation as a potential factor influencing seed yield. Presents various studies conducted on insect infestation, reporting that "under the growing conditions occuring at Madison [Wisconsin], a satisfactory fertility or seed set would be 65 to 70%. Thus...reduction in seed yield in 1956 seems to have been substatial." Concludes that "causal insects may have been associated previously with native species of [B. purgans L.] and, with the increased usage of smooth bromegrass for forage purposes, may have found in this a host wherein damage might assume considerable economic importance." |
