Abstract/Contents:"Establishment of buffalograss [Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Englem.] has traditionally been with seed during spring and early summer. Using prerooted vegetative plugs, the potential for late season establishment was examined. Fifty by fifty mm plugs of buffalograss were prerooted for 4 weeks in the greenhouse in cavity trays and were compared to non-prerooted plugs. Plugs were planted 9/2/86, 9/16/86, 10/6/86, and 10/28/86 to determine how late in the season plugs could be planted and survive with good growth potential and survival the following spring. Percent survival, green-up potential, color and percent cover were measured during 1987. Prerooted plugs from the early plantings showed greater percent cover early in 1987 with both types of plugs showing equal percent cover later in the season. Percent survival of the final two plantings was greatly decreased for both prerooted and non-prerooted plugs; however, non-prerooted plugs showed greater percent cover throughout the following growing season, but did not equal that of the earlier plantings."
