Abstract/Contents:Describes three chemicals, sodium trichloroacetate (sodium TCA), isopropyl-N-carbamate, and sodium arsenite that were applied at various rates on a Kentucky bluegrass pasture "to test the effectiveness of promising chemicals in conjuction with two cultivations at different seasons of the year for eradication of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratnesis). States that injury to the grass was determined by counts of living and dead blades of grass, noting when the counts were taken. Reports that "sodium TCA was superior at all dates and all rates...[and] the best results were obtained with sodium TCA during the relatively, hot dry months of July through September." Also reports that disking after a chemical treatment was more effective in eliminating grass versus no disking. Details four conditions that must be satisfied by a chemical to be effective in eliminating a plant: 1) must kill the entire plant, 2) have a short toxicity period, 3) leave livestock unharmed, and 4) be economically reasonable to use based on tillage operations. Concludes that sodium TCA "comes the cloest to meeting these four requirements...[and sodium TCA] proved to be effective in eradicating Kentucky bluegrass.
