| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses potential problems that turfgrass managers may be facing due to population increases in the southeastern United States. States that "the presence of heavy soil types that can become compacted during construction and have very low infiltration rates...increases the likelihood of excess moisture in the rootzone, especially in seasons with high rainfall and/or low evapotranspiration rates." Provides information on an experiment conducted to "measure changes in nitrate-uptake efficiency and water loss throughout the year." Reports that "pollutant uptake drops off drastically in winter months. It would be a mistake, environmentally, to add effluent to bermudagrass in the winter, and great care should be taken at times other than summer." Concludes that "turfgrasses can provide excellent sites for effluent dispersal. But, applications and hydraulic loading must be done correctly." |
