Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the Hazard Communication Standards requirements for manufacturers to "produce material safety data sheets (MSDSs) and labels describing the hazards of each product they produce" and for employers to "develop a written program, maintain labels on product containers and catalog MSDSs for recommendations on the safe use of these products and emergency response information." Describes increases in the number of immigrants entering the American work force, as well as the growing trend of illiteracy among American employees, and the safety considerations that must be made by employers to accomadate "employees that do not speak or read the English language", stating that "the Occupational Safet and Health Administration requires the employer to do whatever it takes to make employees aware of the risks associated with handling hazardous materials." Discusses methods for training illiterate or non-English speaking employees, including "demonstrations of the hazards of materials"; "the use of movies showing graphic results of unsafe work practices"; "a forum of employees to share their experiences"; and "reading hazard information from labels and material safety data sheets to employees...[which] can be translated...by a bilingual employee." Also highlights the need for providing "employees with instructions on how to use the products correctly and safely...through verbal description...and through demonstration", and training them "to recognize and respond to an emergency that involves a hazardous chemical." |
