| Abstract/Contents: | "The gelatinous slime produced by certain algae may cause problems on turf and has been termed "squidge". Laboratory examination of samples taken from five separate turf areas indicated the three algal genera, Cylindrocystis, Dactylothece, and Mesotanium, capable of extensive mucilage production, were the principal cause of squidge. Other unicellular and also filamentous algae, moss protonema, fungal hyphae, nematodes and other soil fauna were also recorded in samples examined but they are not mucilage producers and are consequently not thought to be causal agents of squidge. Repeated applications of calcined sulphate of iron bulked with sand, cresylic acid and dichlorophen gave some control of squidge, although marked turf scorch was noticed in plots treated repeatedly with calcined sulphate of iron and cresylic acid. The long term control of squidge is discussed." |
