Abstract/Contents:SUMMARY: "The first year's results of an experiment on the fertiliser of a Festuca rubra L. ssp. commutata Gaud. and Agrostis castellana Boiss. & Reut. sward on a sand rootzone are described. The trial was sown on 8 August 1985 and fertiliser treatments began in April 1986 and consisted of three levels of each nutrient; nitrogen (100, 200, 400 kg ha-1 N), potassium (0, 150, 300 kg ha-1 K2O) phophorus (0, 25, 50 kg ha-1 P2O5) with, and without, lime (0, 1427 kg ha-1 CaCO3). Results from assessments completed in 1986 and January 1987 are presented which include: ground cover, botanical composition, hardness and sand chemical analysis. The results to date indicate that ground cover increased with increasing nitrogen, together with Agrostis content. The lowest level of nitrogen favored Festuca, but was insufficient to maintain quality turf on pure sand. No effects of potassium, phosphorus or lime have been found in ground cover, botanical composition and hardness [hardiness] test as yet. Phosphorus and potassium levels in the soil increased with increasing rate of fertiliser phosphorus and potassium application. Phosphorus levels were significantly higher in 100 kg ha-1 yr-1 nitrogen plots than in 200 and 400 kg ha-1 yr-1 nitrogen plots."
