Abstract/Contents:Reviews research conducted at Virginia Tech to improve the establishment and quality of transplanted sod under limited irrigation. The methods evaluated include: (1) application of chemicals to conserve available moisture, (2) application of chemicals with plant growth regulator activity, and (3) cultural practices. A non-ionic wetting agent, a polyvinyl alcohol, and a hydrophilic compound were applied to conserve available moisture. Chemicals with plant growth regulator activity that were evaluated were Panasea and BAP. Panasea a seaweed extract, contains natural cytokinins, and BAP is a manufactured source of cytokinin. Cytokinins occur naturally in plants and primarilty affect cell division and may promote adventitious root formation. Cultural practices evaluated were iron fertilization and coring of sod with an aerator prior to harvesting. Methods that have consistently shown an improvement in sod root development are: iron fertilization and core aeration of sod with an aerator prior to harvesting, and treatment of sod with a non-ionic wetting agent or cytokinin to allow for a more thorough wetting when water is applied.
