Abstract/Contents: | Explains that "mound-building activities of nonnative Solenopsis spp. [imported fire ant] are known to alter the physical and biogeochemical properties of soils." Suggests that "ants may have a resilient role in maintaining soil quality (by digging, pelleting and mixing horizons in the soil profile) due to their ability to survive and thrive in agronomic settings despite disturbance regimes." States that "the objective of this pilot study was to compare nutrient availability in ant-affected versus undisturbed soils and turfgrass in a sod production agroecosystem during the late summer (coinciding with peak imported fire ant biomass)." Reports higher levels of N [nitrogen], OM [organic matter], pH, and P [phosphorus] in ant-affected turfgrass than in undisturbed vegetation. Suggests that "the complexity of biogeochemical interactions within an nests is most likely further enhanced by plant uptake and excretion in the rhizosphere coupled with continuous soil mixing by colony workers." |
