Abstract/Contents:Laboratory studies were carried out in Florida during the summers of 1971 and 1972 to determine the resistance of 16 accessions of St. Augustine grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) to attack by large populations of Blissus insularis Barber. The accessions FA-108, Floratam (FA-110) and FA-118 exhibited a high degree of antibiosis, which resulted in 57.66, 56.35, and 48.91% mortality of adults, respectively, after seven days. Only 25-60% of the nymphs that survived on the three accessions became adult in seven days, whereas 98.2% of examples confined on the common cultivar (the susceptible standard) did so. Adult fecundity was significantly lower on these resistant accessions; five females produced an average of 9.75 eggs/stolon on Floratam and 42.75 on the common cultivar. Floratine, a cultivar currenly grown in the States, also showed considerable resistance to feeding.
