Abstract/Contents:"Annual growth curves of L. perenne, T. repens, and T. pratense in monoculture and their components in grass-legume mixtures are examined to demonstrate yield gains obtained by combining different seasonal growth periodicities. Gains were obtained from a L. perenne-T. pratense mixture because of year-round growth in which temperatures varied from those optimal for the legume. Adaptation of T. pratense enabling it to grow when high temperatures and moisture stress were coincidental allowed a shift from grass dominance in winter to legume dominance in summer even where fertilizer N was applied. Effects of legume contents and grass associates on N-fixation in twelve mixtures were measured. A beneficial effect of increased grass yield where fertilizer N was applied is one of several factors to consider when selecting grasses and legumes to form mixtures with adequate nitrogen nutrition."
