Abstract/Contents:"The world collection of perennial grassland plants comprises 12,940 samples of 366 species, thereof 7,094 samples of leguminous plants, 5,286 samples of gramineous plants, and 560 samples of plants growing in arid regions. These samples are tested at experimental stations of the Institute situated in the Nonchernozem zone in the northern Caucasus, in Kazakhstan, in the Volga area, in West and East Siberia, in the Far East as well as in the Uzbek and Ukrainian Soviet Republics. The samples were grouped according to the following characters: High yields of fresh matter, hay and seeds, resistance to disease, winter hardiness, crude protein content, earliness, persistence, and other valuable biological properties. Using the world collection of grassland plants, 69 regionized varieties have been bred in the USSR between 1966 and 1975, among them 13 clover, 11 alfalfa, 3 sainfoin, 1 common bird's foot trefoil, 4 timothy, 10 meadow fescue, 2 wheat grass, 3 perennial ryegrass, 2 couch grass, 8 cock's foot, 8 bromegrass, 1 meadow grass, 2 canary grass, and 1 bent grass varieties."
