Abstract/Contents:"The 1980 National Kentucky Bluegrass Test of the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) was established at the Cornell University Turfgrass Field Laboratory, Ithaca, NY on Oct. 15, 1980. The soil is a well drained Arkport sandy loam. Three replicates of 1.3 x 2 m plots were established from seed for the 86 entries in the test. During the summers of 1984-87, the plot area was irrigated occasionally in order to prevent drought stress. Fertilizers were applied two times annually to provide 95 kg N/ha/yr, and lime was applied to maintain a soil + thatch pH of 6.5. The plot area was mowed twice weekly at a height of about 4 cm. Patch diseases did not appear on the plot area at any time up to 30 Apr 1985 when each of the 258 plots was inoculated with each of the patch disease fungi. Inoculum consisted of autoclaved Kentucky bluegrass gains infested with either L. korrae or P. graminicola. Inoculum was placed at a measured location within each plot by removing a 2.5 cm-diam by 2 cm deep cylinder of turf, depositing 1.2 cm3 of inoculum in the hole, and replacing the turf. Patch diseases over the inoculum sites have been occurring in a few plots since autumn 1985. Disease measurements made on 20 Aug 1987 are reported below as the numbers of replicates (3 maximum) exhibiting a patch disease of any size. In Nov 1985, P. graminicola caused patches in 1 replicate of each of 3 cultivars (S.D. Common, Escort, and 239); and in May 1986, in 1 rep of 3 differenc cvs (Fylking, VB 4699, and H-7). In Nov 1985, L. korrae caused a patch in 1 rep of Merit; and in May 1986, in 1 rep of Cello, Argyle, and Escort and 2 reps of WWAG-480. In Aug 1987, not all the same cvs were affected by the diseases, and more than half the entries in this test did not develop patch diseases from either pathogen. A similar inoculated NTEP study in Riverhead, NY, yielded summer patch results in 1985 and in 1986."
