Abstract/Contents:States that "perennial ryegrass (Lolim perenne L.) is regarded as an ideal grass species for use as turf and forage in temperate grassland area." Also states that "ryegrass establishes and grows quickly and will provide dense, solid, high quality turf in a short period of time. However, its use is restriced as it lacks persistency due to drought and cold stresses." Explains that hybrids "are being used to broaden the gene pool and to provide the plant breeder with options to combine high quality traits with broad adaptations to a range of environmental constraints such as heat and drought." Notes that "many plant species from temperate regions can increase their cold tolerance in response to low, non-freezing temperatures, a phenomenon called cold acclimation." Also notes that "average crop loss due to drought in the U.S. [United States] exceed $1.2 billion each year and up to $1 billion may be lost each year due to frost." Dicusses the "gene/molecular marker discovery for drought tolerance in fescue." Also discusses "molecular breeding for cold tolerance in perennial ryegrass."
