Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the practice of soil testing, describing the three types of soil sampling. States that "random sampling simply refers to the collection of cores throughout the area being tested...Grid collection relates to the use of a grid system when sampling...Zone sampling is used where differences in the rotozone exist in different areas within for instance the same athletic field." Details the laboratory analysis process, mentioning that "extractants are added to the soils in order to measure available nutritents. There are several extract types and the type used will dramatically influence the results." Also discusses the interpretation of results. States that "the primary issues that determine the nutrient status of a soil are soil pH, CEC (cation exchange capacity), lime requirement and the plant available P [phosphorus], K [potassium], Ca [calcium], Mg [magnesium], and S [sulphur]." Concludes that "soil testing is an extremely important tool for turfgrass managers in determining the nutrient status of the rootones...A good soil test depends on careful sampling, accurate analysis and result interpretation." |
