Abstract/Contents:Discusses potential applications of geographic information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS) in golf course management. Explains that GIS is "a database...tied together with a map...The...GPS is primarily comprised of a series of satellites orbiting the earth. These satellites broadcast signals that can be interpreted by specialized receivers to determine the position of a given object. Once a GIS map is incorporated into [a] maintenance program, a GPS and handheld computer can greatly enhance the speed and efficiency of record keeping, as they can help record changes to a course or specific data on pest or disease infestations." States that "GPS/GIS technology can also help locate and demonstrate problems affecting course playability." Concludes that "similar to the evolution of mowing equipment - from the hand scythe, to ground-driven reel, to the mechanical-driven rotary to the hydraulic mowers...technology will revolutionize turf management. The benefits technology provides are far too valuable for it not to be accepted on a broad scale and the rewards are waiting for those superintendents that embrace technology."
