| Abstract/Contents: | Describes turfgrass education and research programs in the Czech Republic. States that "the first golf courses in the Czech Republic were established in the beginning of the 20th century. Football, as traditionally the most popular Czech sport, has been always closely connected with turfgrass. Management and turfgrass quality were, however, often not sufficient. From 1950's to 1980's turfgrass research and education were in decline. Nevertheless, systematic research in the area of turf establishment techniques and its evaluation began at that time." Explains that "in the 1990's...there was a rapid renaissance of turfgrass education and research. Since 1996 an optional subject Turfgrass management was inserted into teaching programs for students of all faculties at Mendel University in Brno...Long-term courses...called Turfgrass school were organized regularly for greenkeepers, groundsmen and gardeners in the period 1996-2004 at Mendel University in Brno." Describes research projects at Mendel University, highlighting research and demonstration turfgrass plots established there. Mentions turfgrass breeding, publication activities, and goals of turfgrass research in the Czech Republic. |
