Abstract/Contents:Reviews a study conducted to determine the potential effect of wetting agents in water repellent soils. Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "surfactants were applied monthly at De Bilt, [Netherlands] and Bakersfield, [California]. At De Bilt, surfactants were applied at 0 or 19 l [liters] ha-1 [per hectare] to a water repellent fine sand fairway (mixed Festuca/Poa annua stand. Soil volumetric water content (VWC) was measured monthly (0-5 cm [centimeter] depth) using a time domain reflectrometry device." Reports that "surfactant treatments increased VWC (0-5 cm) relative to the control at the De Bilt fairway site and decreased moisture heterogeneity...Soils treated with ATBC were drier and VWC less heterogeneous than in the HTBC treatment, yet plant density was significantly greter...in the ATBC treatment." Concludes that "treatment of water repellent soils with ATBC surfactants increased soil moisture content homogeneity resulting in improved turf performance and density over HTBC surfactants."
